Life reigns
Biotopes are artificial underwater structures that originate from human intervention. They create a new habitat, which is quickly exploited by all kinds of species which develop there.
In fact, any artificial reef or any sunken structure can be considered a biotope. Although in some cases they are purposely installed to create a new habitat and in others they end up carrying out this function by accident, as is the case with sunken boats.
Our recommended dive: Boreas
The Boreas is undoubtedly the most famous wreck of the Costa Brava. Located just next to Palamós, it was sunk on purpose to practice diving there.
In a single dive we can get an overview of this wreck, but to discover all the nooks and crannies carefully, we will need to visit it more than once.
The dive to the Boreas wreck begins by a descent down along the anchor line to the deck of the boat at a depth of between 22 and 28 metres. Once there, we can visit the different decks and the area where it rests on the sand. It will be necessary to keep an eye on air consumption and non-decompression time in order to do this dive safely. There are some parts of the interior of the boat that can be visited, but it is preferable to do so led by an experienced guide from one of the diving centres in the area.
A dive reserved for advanced divers and experts due to its depth and some technical difficulties.
The Boreas wreck has created a new habitat where many animals have sought shelter, from the schools of fish that surround it to some European lobsters that hide between the sand and the damaged hull of the ship, as well as the sessile species that cover its surfaces.
The deep blue sea and the special fish or a school of fish that comes near the area will accompany us along our route. The aesthetics of the ship and the life that accompanies it creates a characteristic landscape of this emblematic space.
Remember that the biotopes and wrecks are considered spaces of interest both for their diversity and for the history they host, and we must therefore act in accordance with this fact.
