DIVE IN BLUE - ECODIVING COSTA BRAVA
ECODIVING COSTA BRAVA - DIVE IN BLUE
Project for the collection and recycling of neoprene clothing.
Because we want a sea that is always blue, the Association of Sub Costa Brava diving centres is launching a campaign to collect and recycle used neoprene.
This material, made from petroleum derivatives, usually ends up in the selective collection of textiles, without being recycled.
Our association is strongly committed to sustainability and the protection of the marine environment, which is why we have been carrying out actions under the generic name of ecodiving/collection for several years.
In this context, and knowing that the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) states that the textile industry is the most polluting industry in the world after the oil industry, this year we have focused on neoprene, a material that is still basic in the manufacture of bus garments, but which also has an important environmental impact and is difficult to recycle.
That is why we are launching a campaign to collect and recycle neoprene, which can be deposited in any of the associated centres, in special containers installed during the month of August. In this link you will find all the associated centres: https://www.submarinismocostabrava.com/en/diving-centers .
All the neoprene will be collected and recycled by a specialised company.
On this website we will report on the results of the campaign this year, specifying the amount that has been collected and publishing the certificate stating that as much as possible will be selected and sent for recycling.
This project is co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA), with the support of the Government of Catalonia and the European Union within the framework of the GALP Costa Brava.
COLLECTION RESULTS
This material has been separated, classified and destined for different uses. On the one hand, 30 suits in good condition have been delivered for reuse to the Zoology Unit of the Autonomous University, so that they can be used by trainees and approximately twenty have been delivered to the DNewton artisan workshop, which will study how to integrate them into their designs to give this material a second life.
The rest of the neoprene collected has been sent to Terracycle, a globally recognised company in the management of recycling materials that are difficult to process.
These partnerships ensure that the neoprene collected will be treated in an environmentally friendly way, following the highest standards in waste management: reuse and recycling.
